Dr Gordon Macdonald, CEO of Care Not Killing, the campaign group leading opposition to the Bill said:
“We welcome the announcement and his opposition and having been open-minded at the start of the process the FM sees the dangers of the proposals.
“This Bill cannot proceed safely. The Scottish Government stated the Bill is not fit for purpose when the health secretary told the health committee ‘the bill … is outside the legislative competence of the Scottish Parliament’.”
“MSPs should not sanction the progress of this Bill which is not fit for purpose.
“Even the health committee which includes 7 out of 10 members who are openly supportive of assisted suicide have severely criticised almost every aspect of the proposals and clearly the legislation cannot be allowed to proceed further.”
